Yack- I have noticed that some smells are VERY powerful triggers. Ex: Menthol Cigarettes. It took me a long time to make this connection.
For many years, I'd 'just be' in a bad spot. Often it was connected to the cigarette odor, even very faint. Smells in general are very elemental and can invoke a strong emotional response. The combination of brown paper towles and a certain hand soap takes me back to happy memories as a kid, for example. I'm sure if a smell has a strong emitional component attached, you woulkd be much more senitive to it. |

I had the experience of getting a night guard, and instructions to add a few drops of mouth wash after cleaning in the morning, while the guard is in water during the day.
Listerine was suggested due to the alcohol content. Every day I found it harder and harder to do the care, finally it dawned on me that this brand was what my parents used and alcohol, cigarette smoke a stale unpleasent smell was linked to the product usually in the morning in the air in the bathroom. Days when houses had one bathroom. ![]() After telling my T that I noticed this and learned, that smell and memory is closely linked and something to due with brain / nerve structure. I went home and checked and now the listerine smells just like listerine! My favorite scent is rose- takes me to a beautiful garden.... back now. I also think the increased sense is a sign post of getting better. Just like when my color vision was blunted for me at my worst depression, I sure that smell would have been blunted if I cared or if I noticed- maybe the loss of appetite. ![]() |
