I am hearing stories about the Beta Blocker, propranolol being used for PTSD? I am already on it to keep my heart beat steady so it don't take off and have just had MVP surgery. I am wondering if anyone ESLE has been on this and has it helped you? I also read it can help folks who are agressive due to brain trauma? I have this issue too! WOW! if this works.... it will be like fixing a load of my issues!

i am on propanolol for over 2 years now, for a mental condition, but it does help my palpitations from the other meds, i'm on 9 different meds, i know the propanol works for me because i never felt as good on anything until the propanolol was introduced, it stopped my migrains and i now it was because of the propanolol, as the doctor who prescribed it at the emergency room said there were more studies with a success rate study where propanolol showed much promise for migrains. i forgot to tell you i was in the emergency room for a migraine too, i used to have to go to the emergency room alot of migrains and all they would give me was imetrix which i hated it would knock me out for days.-avlady

I loved the effects of propanolol on my PTSD. It stopped panic attacks and flashbacks. Unfortunately, however, it exasperated my psoriasis so badly, it has taken me a year and a half to get it somewhat under control again. My doctor had not checked the dominant side effects of the drug when she prescribed it, and the psoriasis flare is a major warning.
I found out through the Internet after wondering why I had psoriasis over 80% of my body over the length of one summer (when normally in summer it goes into remission). The toll on my self-esteem was disastrous. I felt shame and had to cover up so as not to gross people out. Be very careful to check the side effects for any drug suggested by your psychiatrist, no matter how much you may trust him or her, they are not perfect and sometimes even with the best of intentions, negative results can happen.

I've been on propranolol for awhile and it is great for PTSD & anxiety. I'm so much calmer than I used to be, it is easer to make decisions. I could not take it while I was in the hospital or rehab hospital after spine surgery and there was a definitive difference in my ability to deal with the anxiety. Perhaps in part because I don't like being vulnerable or in hospitals so it was a high stress place for me but the other meds lowered my blood pressure too much. It took some time for me to get up to a working dose but my body adapted and my blood pressure remains normal.
Using propranolol is great there have not been any side effects and I don't need to worry about tolerance or addiction. I haven't heard anything about the brain trauma or rage issues. The only thing I'm aware of is that I'm not suposed to stop taking the meds abruptly, not something I want to do. Hope it all goes well for you.
