I was listening to Dr Reid Wilson in an online summit where he mentions we have to go in and access a safe but reasonable fascimile of the fear(that original fear with somebody with ptsd) and have them hang out in that feeling and amygdala learns that it is secreting too much epeneferin and it begins to quiet down as long as we don't scare ourself. Is he talking about prolonged exposure therapy here?
If so, how do I find a therapist who would be willing to help me hang out in the fear or trauma and move towards the fear? I live in Toronto, Canada and there are 10s to 100s of therapists on psychologytoday.com but how do I know which one does the therapy Dr Wilson is talking about? example last night I was playing a card game with a few friends and my wife. Suddenly I started feeling anxious. I excused myself and went into another room. I sat down and thought yes I know Im afraid, that topic of conversation was scary, but I am safe, I am ok, then took a few deep breaths until I no longer felt anxious, then I went back to enjoying playing cards, good company of friends and stimulating conversations. I didnt stuff or push away my fear\anxiety. I acknowledged it and let it happen while I breathed until it was over. the only way to know which treatment provider is right for you is to contact them, ask them questions, meet with them and if you still feel comfortable to schedule some sessions with them, give therapy a try with them for a bit and if it doesnt work for you to move on to the next one until you find the treatment provider that works for you and your problems. |
