I have PTSD stemming from childhood, it will never go away but I had it in check. While I was shopping ( big box store MAJOR retailer) some dude popped off a gun firing 4 times in the commission of an attempted robbery. I was scared for my sons life and for my life. I told my friends what happened but the big box tells the story in a completely different way ( several witnesses to the way I said it happened) and they are questioning why big box doesn't match my version of events. The do not question my version. My friends trust me to speak the truth. We are all puzzled by big box's behavior. The police have even changed their version of what happened. This is the problem. My PTSD has reared its ugly head AND I feel invalidated because big box says that it happened outside and not inside AND the police have changed and say what big box is saying. I AM NOT OK WITH THIS! I don't lie and these guys make it seems as if I and some of their employees and my son are completely off of our rockers! I started seeing a therapist for this and have gone back on meds to help cope with the anxiety. This is frustrating as H***!

Truth is very important to someone who struggles with PTSD. When something bad happens, at the very least, as bad as it is "truth" about it brings an important comfort and sense of control whereas when the truth is not stated it upsets the mind in that a problem cannot be solved without understanding how the problem happened and how steps can be taken towards prevention.

What you described can be especially triggering when one had a childhood were they did not feel safe, dealt with "untruths about threats" where the child's ability to problem solve was at it's most vulnerable. And the one place that tends to get stored is in the emotional area of the brain. We never forget how something or someone we experience in our lives makes us "feel". We are emotional beings and it's been a significant part of our survival as a species.

The story was most likely changed because the place didn't want to have bad publicity and maybe scare off customers and lose money.Same thing happened to me before except there was a person murdered, people saw the body, yet the news story was 100% different.

Tbh,it really messed with my head, made me doubt my version was real, plus really triggered my PTSD symptoms.

It's very frustrating and I'm sorry you had this experience.I wish I had talked to my T about it,instead, since I doubted myself I accepted the false version of the story, which was wrong of me.
Thanks for this!
