My husband has many health issues which they are calling "conversion disorder" basically his mind is creating the ilnesses to deal with some sort of memmory he never delt with. Some things have come out among family but he says he don't remember. They involve abuse. He does not remember anything from his childhood except when he broke his finger and hurt his foot. How do I help him open up and start dealing with this. He is seeing a therapist as am I. I don't ask about what is discussed, and he don't ask what I discusse. I do share with him about my sessions sometimes though. They don't do couples where we seek treatment.

If his in therapy I would think that is where he will learn to open and deal with "it" in time.

It's probably a psychosomatic disorder, now called psycho-physiologic disorder rather than a true conversion disorder.

Conversion disorders are usually directly related to an incident (lose voice when due to speak) and temporary:

Like Mouse says, his therapy/therapist should address his childhood/growing up problems but perhaps you two could take a stress reduction class together or something to help him learn to relax and work on diet, fitness and you all's lifestyle if that is a problem for either of you.

be careful of that conversion disorder diagnosis, its used more in some parts of the country than others and often just means that the doctors cant figure out what is going wrong physically. I know someone who was diagnosed as conversion disorder and turned out she had had a stroke.

Thanks everyone. Sometimes I am not sure if the docs just don't know and called this conversion. I do know he gets much worse under stress.
