I love the name. You are supportive. I have noticed and thought I should second that motion.

You know that scene at the end of American Beauty where Kevin Spacey's daughter's friend asks him how he's doing and he pauses, taken aback, and with a sense of absolute gratitude says, "it's been a long time since anyone's asked me that."? You know the scene? That's how finding this thread made me feel. Moved to absolute gratitude. Your unsolicited interest, so unexpected, made my day.
So in this moment, I'm doing great. And to answer your question in a broader context, well, I've had my dark moments but I'm getting through. There's another movie I love starring Jack Lemmon called The Days Of Wine And Roses in which his alcoholic wife, who's just fallen off the wagon, confeses that she "wishes the world was better than it is." This sentiment of wishing for a brighter life and world, of grappling for something to believe in other than some superficial escape, is a great way to sum up how I've been. But like Jack Lemmon's character, I remain steadfast in my resolve to walk the straight and narrow. I really hope that what I do here matters to people. Without ego or self interest, I do my best to offer kind words and advice where possible. But I'm just a guy and I never know if what I say matters to anyone. In fact, I'm never even sure if what I say should matter to anyone. So again, thank you, both of you. Humbly yours. ![]() Cyran0

Hm, what a well written post. I too wish the world was a better place, that's why I believe that what we say, what you say in line of support is of great value. You take the time to step out of yourself to offer a hand to a friend and that IS what makes the world a better place. Now I want to see the movie.

Oh, Cyrano,
It does matter what you say, the real you shines through. You are a great caring person, and I just wanted to ask you how you are since you are always responding to us. Hey, can you help me out? Off subject though... I am on spring break the rest of this week and next and I would love to watch some good movies and you know I love Harold and Maude. Do you know of any movies like that ? The dark humor kind? Garden State is simular, but I need a good one to inspire my writing. Thanks! |

happy, if you're looking for something to inspire your writing, I recommend Wonder Boys. I absolutely must write after I watch this movie. I just can't help it. It's just a terrific film.
Other dark or dramatic comedies, with a fair amount of depth, are well made, and make me want to write would include: Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Barton Fink, Deconstructing Harry, The Royal Tenenbaums, Igby Goes Down, Naked (1993), Welcome To The Dollhouse, Glenngary Glenn Ross. I hope this was helpful. Cyran0

Hi Cyrano,
I just watched Wonder Boys and what a great movie. It did the trick because this morning I made major headway on my poem for class on Monday. So Thank YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I have the other movies on reserve on Netflix. I came up with this beginning today for my poem. ( you can laugh at me if you want) It has to be in 3rd person, about our childhood( so long ago), 36 lines, up to 8 syllables per line.
Shipshewana Daze Driving through her famous hometown Those rural unforgotten smells Pierce her mind of Ernie the straw Hatted Amish Pavarotti Bellowing out augmented Dutch Operas as his horse drawn cow plop salad shooter nourishes Turned over corn stalk stumps black muck. ( did I say I am a crazy? lol) I have more written, but it still needs a lot of work. |

happy, I'm always the last to comment on poetry because I'm not very good at it. For some reason, I just don't have the poetry gift. But what I can say is that I like the imagery and that it seems to establish a narrative of sorts, which I enjoy.
![]() Thanks for sharing it and I hope you'll post the finished poem! Cyran0

Thanks Cyrano,
I am new at this poetry thing, taking it as a class, but I kinda like it. It is frusterating though sometimes. I finished the poem, it is in the creative corner. I am finding that when i listen to music, it seems to help me write, maybe it gets my right brain working or something. ![]() |
