I haven't done exhaustive research on just why PTSD occurs. I do know that there is some kind of physiological alteration in the brain. Perhaps it has something to do with how acutely a person reacts to things. In my case, it was long-term damage that was reinforced over a period of 20 years or so.

Nevertheless, in major, long-term cases there seems to be a "burned-in" response to certain stimuli. Why? I can mostly cope with my feelings. I just can't change the initial physiological response that happens in my brain whether I want it to or not. I can learn to shut down that response once it happens. But I have not yet figured out how to make it go away altogether.

let me see if i remember all the big-fangled words....
the brain first forms as the reptillian brain - then adds some more, then adds the frontal lobes last.

when we experience trauma, that trauma gets stored in the reptillian brain - not the frontal lobes where our regular memories are. there's words like the migdula or something similiar and the hypothamus... i can't remember what they do but they are all a part of it. I took a 2 weekend intensive class on this stuff. What i do remember most from that is that trauma can take anywhere from 3-10 years to heal in therapy (and as we all know, therapy can last a lot longer than that).

There is not much mystery as to how Post Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) develop.

It is explained at:

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Hypoglycemia
