I have a real problem with excessive startle reaction. I feel bad for my boss. He's new here and such a sweatheart. When he comes to my desk he comes around a corner and I don't see him coming. He'll suddenly start talking and I jump every time. He feels bad and apoligizes. I keep telling him it's ok, it's not your fault. He makes jokes, I'll hum or bang on the files. Which actually works. Today I told him I have PTSD. He said he doesn't even know what that is. I told him I startle easily. He didn't ask any questions, he just walked away. I just wanted to cry. I hate it.

RACEKA,
Have you talked to P-doc (if you have one, or even primary care doc)about taking a beta-blocker? It helps with the physical symptoms by blocking the adrenaline so at least when you are startled your heart won't jump out of your chest. It has helped me a lot and I seem to come back down to earth quicker because the physical reactions aren't as strong. Hang in there. If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know. |

Hey. I feel for you. I do the same thing! And my back is facing the door of my office, so the minute someone comes in, I jump. It is terribly embarrassing. People always say "don't have a heart attack ~ it's just me."
I take all kinds of meds, but it is a knee-jerk reaction. I wish I could help you....but just know, that you are totally not alone. ![]() |

You can just tell ppl you have a high startle response... instead of PTSD if it helps. most ppl get that one.

I think Kiya is on to something. Generally, I just let people know that I "startle really easily," "am jumpy," or "get surprised easily." Most people adjust their behavior accordingly--it's polite. On ocassion, I have to politely ask someone, "Please let me know you're coming in" or "Please don't surprise me." I still startle when people knock on my door or make deliberate footfalls, but it's not as bad as a total shock.
I don't think people even guess the reason--this is just how I am, end of story and curiosity. |

Thanks for all your great ideas. I guess saying I have PTSD wasn't such a great one. My T knows about it because it happens with him when he surprises me in the waiting room. I haven't talked to Pdoc about it. I take so many meds now. If this happened once in a while that would be ok, but it happens constantly.
Thanks again everyone. |
