I went to see my psychologist today and she prescribed me Abilify and I just read up on it and seen that it's for schizophrenia... I haven't had schizophrenia type behavior since I was 13, nor have we talked about it. Why did she prescribe this for me?

I have been taking Abilify for several months now. My doctor presribed it in place of an antipsychotic that I was taking (Seroquel). I am not schizophrenic. I used to get terrible irritability and rage. I think that is what the Abilify helps me with. My doctor just cut back on my dosage.

Abilify is used for treating impulsivity (anger, violent rage, etc.) at much lower doses than is used for schizophrenia. Too bad your doctor didn't explain that very well.

Thank you both for the information. I suppose she put me on it for my anger and self-violence? She never took me off the Seroquel, though. She actually increased it. *sigh* Wish she'd explain things to me instead of always being in a hurry. Pfft!

Abilify is also used at lower doses for treating Bipolar and Bipolar II symptoms. I was switched awhile back to it after being on Zyprexa for many years. It seems to be a good med for my BP II. And it doesn't make me want to eat all the time like the Zyprexa did.

They put me on a very low dose of an antipsychotic for my depression. It did help lift my spirits a little, but I got really bad side effects from it (nausea, vomiting, dizzyness)

Ahhh, I see... So more than likely she either put me on it for my anger and anxiety, for my bipolar, or just all of it. lol This isn't a drug that will show up on drug tests will it? I'm randomly drug tested and a positive screening is the last thing I need.

Absolutely will not show up in a drug screening. It is not an antidepressant or an anxiety drug however. In fact the most common side effect is restlessness.

So that explains her keeping me on seroquel as well, then? Thanks! Abilify for what?

I get scared with medications and drug screenings now... Was on Gabitril and was told it would not show positive on a drug screening... I popped up pos. twice after starting it for benzo's... Several others had too. Now that I'm off of it, I haven't had a pos. screening.

Hmmm, it doesn't have the effect of restlessness for me. Helps me sleep very well. I believe it is classified as a tranquilizer. Ah well, different meds work differently on different people, right?

Very true, bp... Oddly enough, a lot of medications I CAN take are the medications that usually have a lot of bad side effects for people, but ones that don't have a lot of bad side effects are the ones that usually pop up with me. lol

My pdoc put me on Aripiprazole (abilify) to help me "think more clearly" and be able to tell the difference between reality and non-reality better. I think it is helping. He started me on a low dose, 10mg, then we had to cut it back to 7.5 because of severe akesthesia. I take 15mg pills and cut them in 1/2 with a pill cutter to get my 7.5mg dose. When I see him on April 4th again I am going to tell him I need to go back up to 10mg because reality is starting to distort around the edges (so to speak) for me again.

I'm very sensitive to medications, almost "homeopathically" so. Don't know why -- you'd think with the years of substance abuse it would be the other way around, but for example I'm only on 750 mg of Depakote and it zombifies me totally. I need caffeine morning and afternoon just to function at all during the day.

I'm on it for my BP as well, along with Geodon. The combo seems to work quite well.
