I recently went to my pdoc appt and she stated that in the near future she would probably be putting me on a mood stablizer. So my question is what is a mood stablizer??? Thank you in advance.

Mood stabilizers help keep your moods from swinging. This would prevent mania and depression.
For my bipolar disorder, I was given two mood stabilizing drugs, Lithium and Lamictal. Lithium tends to do better controlling the UP mood swings, and Lamictal is doing better with the DOWN swings. Both work to prevent swings in the first place. There are other drugs that can control swings in mood, lots of anticonvulsants, and some of the newer antipsychotics. Your Pdoc should explain which stabilizer she is giving you, and why that one is the best choice.

Crazy Meds (don't be out off by the name) is a great resource. It's funny and surprisingly very accurate. I highly reccomend it to anyone with questions about medications for mental illness or epilepsy. Check it out!

How was explained. Lows and downs are stabilized into the possible normality. It's not only for BAP patients... Meds for example: lithium, carbamazepine, valproic acid and separate group are antipsychotics.
