I've had insomnia for so long and my doctor just gave me remeron today. I"m immune to so many sedatives I'm worried that it won't work. I can take up to 6mg of ativan and still not sleep. Does anyone know if Remeron is good for severe insomnia even if the person is immune to heavy sedatives? I'm getting really desperate because nothing is working for me. Remeron seems to be my last option.
I just really hope it works because I'm in desperate need of sleep ![]() |

Have you tried either Sonata, Desyrel (Trazadone) or Seroquel for sleep? You may want to talk to your doctor about one of these. Good Luck.

Remeron (Mirtazapine) is an anti depressant with sedative properties at low doses. Best effects can be had at 15mg . I have been on it for a year now and the sedative properties worked for 6 months but wore off after that. But boy did I sleep well on it. Good Luck

I have had huge problems with insomnia since perimenopause. For the past two years I took pretty high doses of two benzodiazepines that worked well but my doc was concerned that the high doses were causing side effects so we cut back the dosage on those and added mirtazapine (Remeron). I took 15 mg for a month and then my doc suggested I cut back to 7.5 mg because the lower doses are usually more effective for promoting sleep. I still am erratic sometimes but it works well most of the time.
It really depends on the person for which drug to use. I know seroquel works for some but it made me drunk and unable to walk so I ditched that one. There are quite a few alternatives for hypnotics (sleep meds). One that I really like is Rozerem because it is not physically addictive like my benzodiazepines but it cost $100 so I simply can't afford it.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I've been on remeron now for 3 days and I've been sleeping GREAT! The only thing is, my appetite has increased greatly as well! I'm concerned about gaining weight. Today I bought some diet pills so hopefully they will help me not to gain weight while on remeron. I just got off zyprexa and had gained so much weight on that med, I don't want to go through that again on another med. I'm just so glad I'm finally sleeping. My insomnia was so bad, I would go up to 3 days with no sleep. It's amazing how much lack of sleep will affect one's mental state. I feel so much better now. Thanks again for all the advice and replies.
