What Vickie wrote is absolutely true. Once a drug's patent expires (is it 7 yrs in the U.S.), the drug no longer makes money for the pharmaceutical companies that developed it, so they have to move on to new drugs. They get the 7 year patent period to allow them to try to recoup the cost of development of the drug (which can take over a decade and millions and millions of dollars).
