Anyone have any experience with this drug? It is a MAOI antidepressant. Right now I get a lot of insominia, nightmares, and eat everything in sight. I'm hoping once I get my Abilify, that it will counteract some of the effects. Supposedly, atypical depression responds better to MAOIs. I think I have exhausted the list of SNRIs, SSRIs, and DNRIs that either did not work or stopped working for me. Thanks.

ngold004,

I tried taking oral selegiline about three years ago for what was then severe anergic depression. I noticed a decent antidepressant response on the medication that lasted about three days, but after that three-day period my symptoms returned and I also noticed some additional irritability and cognitive impairment. Of course, that was just my response to the medication. Individual reactions may vary.

Of the MAOIs that I tried, I did the best on an enteric-coated version of Nardil. Nardil, Parnate, and Marplan all inhibit both monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B), while selegiline just inhibits MAO-B at most doses. There is some evidence that the inhibition of MAO-A may produce more antidepressant benefits than the inhibition of MAO-B (Lipper et al., 1979), so I would remain optimistic that Nardil, Parnate, or Marplan might work for you if selegiline doesn't. Unfortunately, the three nonselective MAOIs that I just mentioned require following a tyramine-restricted diet to avoid triggering a potentially life-threatening hypertensive crisis. One of the benefits of the selegiline that you're taking is that there are no dietary restrictions at lower doses.

Well, I hope that the Abilify that you're taking helps to mitigate some of the side effects that you're experiencing with selegiline. Remember, though, that Nardil, Parnate, and Marplan are all potentially effective options if the selegiline doesn't work out.
