I started an anti-psychotic two weeks ago. I have had a significant decrease in appetite. Has anyone else experienced this? I don't remember that being one of the side effects listed, so I'm trying to figure out if it is that or something else that is causing my lack of appetite. Thanks.

Have you got the side effects leaflet that came with them? If not you could always ask a pharmacist or put it in to a search engine with side effects and have a look. Or post it and I'll have a look for you.

I am having the same problem with Lamictal. I just started it and I have noticed a significant decrease in appetite. But, I can afford to lose a few pounds lol.

Hi googley,

Lots of anti-psychotic meds do cause a decrease in appetite. In my experience, just because the med doesn't list decreased appetite as a possible side effect does not mean that it isn't a side effect. Different people react differently to same medications.

There are other possibilities in the decreased appetite though. Depression immediately jumps into my mind as possible cause. Major depression can cause lots of people to avoid eating. Some people overeat with major depression. You have noticed a difference in appetite since beginning the medication...write down the other things you've noticed, and call your doctor's office to let them know.

The doctor may call you and want to change meds, or say that it's probably a side effect. But, let the doctor know, so he/she can determine the probable cause.

Hope that you're feeling well besides that low appetite ~ best wishes to you!

Thank you all for the replies. I'm assuming the decrease in appetitte is linked to the meds since it started almost the same time. But just wanted to see if other people had the same thing. It wasn't listed as a side effect in the information I got. I don't really mind the decreased appetitie as I can also loose a few pounds. Usually my appetitie goes up when I'm depressed. I do have some other side effects (not too bad), but wont be able to contact my pdoc until I see him in two weeks because school is on on break and then he is gone for a week. As we are looking at this as a very short term med for getting me out of a depression that was headed downward quickly and needed some extra help. Thanks for the reassurance.
Thanks for this!
