I know there are alternatives out there to taking prescribed medicines like Adderall, Concerta, Focalin etc. I have tried some of them, I tried taking St. John's Wort, which only helped some of my problems. I also tried not using anything at all, which didn't work one bit.

I know that I have ADHD a lot worse than most people that I know that have it, but I really don't want to take medicine my whole life.

I really want to stop taking medicine because it's making me dopey, I lose my appetite completely and skip meals, and I feel really strange when the medicine wears off. Does anybody have any alternatives to taking prescribed medicines?

Behavioral therapy can be used. More successful with some people than others. My therapist gave me the name of a therapist who specializes in ADHD. He does one on one therapy and also runs support and skills groups for adults with ADHD. He sounded like he provided a good alternative. Maybe there are people like him near you. There is also a support group that meets at a local hospital near where I live. My therapist, who does not specialize in ADHD, does have ADHD himself, and he sometimes has good tips for me too.

Good luck.

My advice is to stay away from the OTC psych meds like St. John's Wort et.al.. It's all marketing hype with them. They may just interfere with the meds that can really do some good....or worse they could just do nothing at all.....however, they say Placebo is the strongest drug of all...........

HZ3006,

A study published back in 2001 found that a combination of American ginseng and ginkgo biloba may be effective in treating ADHD:

It might be something worth looking into.
