So scared about taking meds forever

I just hate this feeling I wake up with each morning

utterly alone and hopeless and scared and sad and anxious about everything, always expecting bad things to happen all the time

it gets less intense throughout the day but it is always there

i am on lexapro, risperidal, ativan and xanax all daily

so worried about everything, my life is such a mess

I would say you may need a medication adjustment if you are taking those medications and still having those symptoms. Is your pdoc aware you have these feelings each day? Be sure to tell him/her.

You are on two benzo's? That, I'd question. Are you in therapy? Your anxiety about meds seems beyond the norm for meds. This isn't really a med problem, is it? Sounds like an anxiety problem. There are med combinations that can help, but you have to be willing to let them work, which means you can't give up on them at the first sign of a side effect. Meds will have side effects, but generally they are just a nuisance, not a danger.

It sounds like you have a high degree of anxiety even with these meds. Do you think you are less anxious on the meds than without? I've heard psychotherapy for anxiety can sometimes really help, so maybe you could try adding that to your meds?

I agree with Farmergirl - you need to think about the cause of th anxiety - is it really about taking meds for ever, is it around general issues?
It really isn't that bad to take meds for ever, as they really do improve your quality of life when you finally get the right combo.

How long have you been on these meds for, and meds in general?

(((feary))) You should definitely talk to your doctor about how you're feeling. I completely understand how you feel about being on medications long term. I am only on two, topamax and cymbalta, but that is enough for me and I know I will be on them for a long time. In my life, I try and be as natural and organic as possible with respect to what I eat, so for me to put chemicals in my body, even as much as they help me, contradicts what I believe otherwise. I also struggle with anxiety but am choosing psychotherapy to help me overcome that because I didn't want any more medication than I'm already on.

But I do worry a bit about how you sound otherwise. You say your life is such a mess. I am definitely not an expert on medications and don't know the effects of everything you're on but I suspect that you should probably be feeling better than you do. I hope you have the strength to discuss this with your doctors so that they can make some adjustments and make you feel better.
