Minor spelling correction, Prothiaden.

It used to be called dothiepin, and I have no idea why they changed the name.

Very typical tricyclic antidepressant, as far as response goes, but compared to all the others, it probably has the most powerful side effects. It has profound cholinergic, adrenergic and histaminic antagonism. That makes it very sedating. If the individual's symptoms include agitation or anxiety, along with depression, it might be a very good choice. Most people don't like it very much, but for others, it's a godsend.

Dothiepin is the generic name, Prothiaden is the brand name.

Dothiepin isn't as good as Amitriptyline, but it has the same side effects. Also, it is the most toxic of all the TCA's, I would avoid it totally. If you have to have a TCA, I would try Clomipramine(Anafranil) or Amitriptyline(Elavil, Endep, Tryptanol). Which one to try first depends on your symptoms.
