I just found out that I'm pregnant and I worried about the effect my meds might have on the baby's development. I talked to my pdoc and he said that it was a decision my husband and I would have to make, but I don't know what to do. I'm on 80mg of Celexa and 400mg of buproprion (welbutrin). he said that I could keep taking it a run the slight risk of problems or get off the meds and run the risl of the stress, anxiety, and depression causing problems. I don't know what to do... neither choice seems good.

Congratulations!
My favorite web link about meds in pregnancy/lactation is www.womensmentalhealth.org You can search for your meds in the search box. Most psychiatrists will avoid giving women advice because they don't know much about the subject. Perinatal psychiatrists give better advice but can be hard to find. People are afraid of taking meds when pregnant but many meds have pretty low risks. Good luck, no matter what you decide.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy!
Medications are rated A, B, C, D, or X for their use in pregnancy. A is the least risk, and X is the most (completely contraindicated). I looked up Celexa and Bupropion for you: Celexa is C. Bupropion is C. For both of them, it is recommended that if you do take them during pregnancy, you taper them off (to zero) during your third trimester so as to avoid withdrawal symptoms in the baby. The tapering of Celexa takes longer than Bupropion. If you do decide to take these meds during pregnancy, your pdoc can at least help you with a good taper plan in third trimester. It is not recommended to take either of these meds while lactating, so this may affect your decision to breastfeed. I think you should speak to your obstetrician about this. If he/she has insufficient expertise to advise, he/she could give you a referral to a genetic counselor. When I was pregnant, I was exposed to a chemical at work and was really worried. I went to see a genetic counselor, who had access to a database of chemicals and their toxic effects on the developing baby. There's probably such a thing for drugs too. The counselor was really knowledgeable and had tools to help him know his stuff.

You might look at a website by a Dr. Hale. It's mostly about breastfeeding, but I think he gets into pregnancy too.

Hello Chinadoll
Again congrats. celexa isn't a really good idea in pregnancy and does cross the placenta. Maybe you should be asking your OBGYN and GP what else you can take? Rhiannon

A big consideration is: exactly how bad were you before meds? Were you to the point where you were in danger of harming yourself? If so, then it might make sense to stay on meds.
Also, you might consider just taking just one of the meds. Why are you doing a combo? Is it because one alone did not do enough for you? Or is the Wellbutrin to help with side effects of the Celexa? Also, are you doing something other than meds to control your stress, depression, and anxiety? If you haven't been in therapy, now would be a good time to start. Also, things like exercise and meditation/relaxation exercises can be helpful. Best of luck with your pregnancy! EJ |

I had just started on anti-depressants 17 years ago when I got my pregnant with my daughter. I went off the meds cold turkey, and while physically the pregnancy was fine, I was miserable the whole time. After she was born, I went right back on them and was depression-free! I'm not trying to scare you, keep in mind this was 17 years ago, I've heard there are certain meds you can take while pregnant, if not, talk to your dr. about weening off if you can. I'm upset that I couldn't enjoy my pregnancy (never did have another baby), but she was worth it, I'd go through it all over again a hundred times over! I don't know what your meds are for, just talk to your dr. and see what he recommends. Good luck and congratulations!
