I just got put on this medicine. I've been diagnosed as major depressive and mood disorder nos. I might fall in the bipolar spectrum. Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone has taken or is on this medication. Also, any negative interactions/side effects. And if it's helped!

I don't know much about this drug yet so I just thought id ask around and see how it worked for everyone else. Any info. you have to say about it would be great! thanks cG

I can tell you that Symbyax is a combination of the medications Zyprexa and Prozac. It's an atypical antipsycotic used to treat mood disorders.

Here's a wikipedia link on Symbyax:

And the Symbyax website:

Best of luck,
Andy.
Thanks for this!

No, sorry no personal experience. It is a relatively new medication used in mental health and I don't think it is widely prescribed yet. I see what it is made from and I caution you on weight gain. Both Zyprexa and Prozac are known to cause weight gain....maybe this med is mixed just right to where that won't happen...hopefully.

Please keep us updated on how you are doing on it!

Thank you Skully. I guess I've been out of the med loop so long I didn't know it was new. I've heard weight gain is bad, I usually don't have problems with that although the holidays are coming up and I don't exercise. The sweets have been calling to me.

I'll update when I can. See doc. tomorrow.

don't know about the weight gain, but Prozac on it's own was the start of my anorexia problems....massive weight loss from that then Wellbutrin.

Maybe with it in combination with the Zyprexa....may make the difference in the weight issue.

How's is working for you, now quite awhile later?

Symbyax is a combination of Prozac (fluoxetine)- an SSRI and Zyprexa (olanzapine) an antipsychotic. It is prescribed for Depressive disorders, bipolar disorders and treatment-resistant depression.

From information I have read, it is a very effective combination and helps with depression, anxiety and mania.

Side effects can be somewhat unpleasant including weight gain and sedation - however, these usually do improve over time.

Hope this helps! If not let me know and I can give you more information!

Jerry
