I was just put on vistaril, but not sure about it. My pdoc says its a sedative. I don't want to be a zombie all day.
Has anyone else been on this? What was your experience? Thank ya Chal |

I haven't found it to be sedating at all, though it has been good for my anxiety.
I was taken off seroquel and placed on hydroxyzine for price reasons; personally I prefer the seroquel. My sinuses seem to be a little drier, but I'm not congested at all. |

I have been using Vistaril as a sleep aid for about a year now. It helps take the edge off my racing thoughts and anxiety. It does not, however, incapacitate me in any way. I have taken many other medications and had negative side effects in one way or another. This one seems right for me, but everybody is different.

Well I no longer take it due to the side effect of it massively slowing down my intestines and making it extremely difficult to use the bathroom...

I was prescribed it to use as a sleep aid but it did not help me sleep whatsoever. It is good for poison ivy itching though.

Vistaril is a little hidden gem for us shrinks, because it is not addicting like benzos. It is not as strong as an Ativan or Klonopin, and it doesnt work for everybody, but I find about 40% of my mild to moderate anxiety sufferers respond well to it. Yes, it dries you up a bit, its related to the antihistamines like Benadryl. But other than that it is a relatively "clean" drug as far as rarely having any seriously bad side effects. You can grow immune to it, so if you are finding it gradually less useful, try skipping days whenever you can to keep your response to it fresh. Doc Byrd

Thank ya'll for responding with your experiences. And you too doc.
I took it a few days. Made me kinda slow and very tired. It did help some with the anixety, but I still needed to take the klonopin with it. I took .5 instead of 1mg of klonopin. And that seemed to work. I'm not taking it every morning as prescribed. Just when I can't control my anxiety. I'm going to run out of my trazadone 3 days before i see my pdoc. I plan on taking the vistaril at night to help me sleep. Do you think thats a good idea? |
