Hi. I posted this in the OCD forum, but thought I might get more responses here. I was put on Luvox three weeks ago to try to control obsessive thoughts I'm having. it doesn't seem to be working. Do I just need to give it more time? Should I expect the Luvox to eliminate the thoughts altogether, or an I expecting too much? I seem to keep dredging up the thoughts and can't dismiss them. anyone else with this problem?

Hey Binti-

What dosage are you on? Have you noticed any improvement? Have you ever had any improvement on any med? Usually you have to be patient especially those with OCD because it takes longer for them to get full remission of symptoms - much longer than if treated for depression. Three weeks is way too early to tell if the med is working or going to work. Luvox is a potent SSRI and works well for OCD but it may take a couple months to notice much improvement in your symptoms. Yes, the goal is complete remission of symptoms but be careful with having too many expectations. Therapy is half the battle and a VERY important part when treating OCD. Are you in therapy?

Hi, Jerry,
thanks for your reply. I'm on just 50 mg of Luvox, and I'm not in therapy. I don't have full blown OCD, just distressing obsessive thoughts. I've been thinking that I might ask my pdoc for a referral to a therapist. I am feeling some better on the Luvox, and will be patient and give it some more time.

Hi Binti,

Just wanted to you give you my two cents. For me, the Luvox got me to a point where the thoughts slowed enough that I could recognize what they were and then challenge and change them. I don't think it's realistic to expect the meds to take away your obsessive thoughts, though they can do that, just not completely in my opinion. So work on changing thoughts and challenging the negative thoughts or unwanted thoughts that you do get. For me it was a thought of i'm fat. I changed that to I'm uncomfortable. Over time with the luvox and therapy I was able to change that to I'm uncomfortable because...

Good luck, best of wishes,
Tara

Hi, Tara,
thanks for your reply, it was very helpful. I'm feeling a little better every day and it is easier to push the thoughts away when they come. I'm sure therapy would help...

Take care,
Binti
