has anyone had gabapentin? my rheumatologist mentioned it because the best treatment for fibromyalgia is anti inflammatories and they can make lithium toxic. this is what i got from Wiki (below) but any comments would be really appreciated gabapentin/neurontin

Gabapentin (brand name: Neurontin®) is an anticonvulsant medication indicated in the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Gabapentin is known for having a relatively mild side effect profile, and passes through the body unmetabolized.
Gabapentin is similar in structure to the neurotransmitter GABA but is not believed to act on the same brain receptors. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown, but its therapeutic action on neuropathic pain is thought to involve voltage gated calcium ion channels.
Gabapentin has also been used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. However the FDA has never approved gabapentin for the treatment of bipolar disorder, and its use for this purpose is increasingly controversial. Some claim gabapentin acts as a mood stabilizer and has the advantage of having fewer side effects than more conventional bipolar drugs such as lithium and depakote.

Hi I take it at night for sleep and nerve pain..It's pretty good...first few days you can get very tired from it but it works well with so many to most meds and no major side effects...sometimes some swelling I read but I never had it ..like water retention....Kidneys should be good for this med..It also helps anxiety..I know a lot of diabetics take it for nerve pain too

I was on it for about 2 weeks for sleep and bipolar disorder but had to quit taking it because my throat started closing up. I guess I was allergic to it or something. It helped me sleep, but that's all it helped.

It was created for MS originally. I'm not sure I like doctors trying it out for other things, as I have heard terrible tales (and a few good) from my MS group friends. Do you have seizures? Hope you find something to help! TC

I was on it for OCD. Don't remember much about the experience, except it made me sleepy. Didn't help my OCD, though.

Neurontin was added to my lithium in 1998, and then zoloft. This is the best I have felt since '69. I started lithium in '79 and struggled most years until this three medicine mix. I used to pray to God to take my life multiple times a day. Now I thank God for my life and I sleep! Even though they are both antiseizure meds, Depakote was awful for me. Responses seem so individual. I am so grateful there is a choice of treatments now. Work with your doctors and if they don't work with you, change.
