I've just started being medicated since May. Can a person donate blood when they're on antipsychotics, etc? Right now the combo is Lamictal, Saphris, and Cogentin (but at this rate, it could change yet again... sigh). Anyone have experience with blood donation while on meds?

This is a good question as I've always wondered too as I am on an antipsychotic and wanted to donate now that I finally weigh enough to (I was way too light before).

I have donated blood while on antidepressants, anticonvulsant (Depakote, Lamictal) and antipsychotic. They give you a folder of stuff to read and the type of drugs you can be taking are for cancer, erectile dysfunction, hair growth.... strange things, not psychiatrically strange things.

According to the American Red Cross website the only restriction that may apply to you is, "[t]he person's eligibility is based on the reason that the medication was prescribed. As long as the condition is under control and the person is healthy, blood donation is usually permitted".
http://chapters.redcross.org/br/nort...igibility.html There are also restrictions based on age and weight per gender: http://www.redcrossblood.org/donatin...y-requirements |
