First off I apologize if this isn't necessarily the right category, and I'd rather not get into the specific meds I'm on as that isn't my issue.

I've been having trouble physically and mentally taking my medication daily. I know it helps me feel better, but I often feel as if they've gotten caught in my throat. This has actually happened twice with capsules I'm on, it's gotten stuck there and one end came off so the powder inside went straight back up to my mouth if that makes sense. However that hasn't happened in a very long time yet I'm still having issues thinking it will happen again so I avoid taking them.

I don't want to make this post too long, basically I don't know what to do. I'm currently transitioning to a different T and mental health team so I don't feel comfortable yet bringing this up and even then I don't know what exactly to bring up.

I hardly get enough sleep to begin with, a few hours every other day or so, but this has been keeping me up even more as some of my meds are taken before bed. It's been a long time since I've slept so I apologize if this doesn't make much sense or if I haven't stressed enough how debilitating this is.

What do I do?

So the problem is more you avoid taking pills because you have difficulty swallowing them more than because you forget?

It is easier to swallow a pill if you place it on the back of your tongue and then tilt your head down chin close to your chest and then drink and swallow. If you still have difficulty you might see if drinking through a straw helps.

If forgetting to take them is part of the problem, I'd suggest getting one of those weekly pill organizers. I have one that has 3 compartments for meds, morning, noon, and night. I fill it up once a week, and it's a visual reminder to take my meds.

A lot of medicines come in different formulations, including as a liquid. The difficulty you describe is called dysphagia. If you ask your new team for a meds review, you could mention this and they will help you get the right type, including any pill type reminder systems. Good luck!

You can also ask your pharmacist instead of your doctor.

I had this problem yesterday. I'm taking antibiotics and Mucinex which are both huge, and I took it right before bed, so I was up til 4am with so much anxiety. Both of them got stuck in my throat and I had a panic attack bc throwing up is one of my biggest phobias.

I tried everything, but eating bread (soft sliced bread in my case) helped push it down a little bit. I usually take my pills with a smoothie or juice, so tasting them isn't an issue, and eat a bit of food right after so it goes down.

I second the weekly pill organizer too, it's helped me remember if I took my meds that day or not.
