I know my doctor would be the best person to answer this question, but I wanted to see others opinions (if there can be), before I ask my pdoc. I will be seeing him on 11/15.
I want to try to re-attempt to continue to taper the Xanax. I've been on the 2mg per day dosage for at least 6 months now, so I'd like to see if I can try to get by on less. Right now I take 0.5mg four times a day. I wanted to ask my pdoc to see if I can decrease my dosage to 0.5mg three times a day and have an additional 0.5mg as a PRN just in case I need it or I would have to go back to the original dosage. Also if I were to decrease my dosage to 3 times a day, what would be the best way to spread it out? I would also like to know, from other's experiences, is it safe to lower my total daily dosage from 2mg to 1.5mg? I appreciate all your responses (even criticized). Thanks, ~ Andy |

I have only taken it PRN, although it was prescribed up to 3 X day at .5mg. But rarely have I taken that dose. Usually I take 1/8 to 1/2 of the .5mg. Enough to keep anxiety from increasing when I can't find other ways to calm down.
Your prescriber knows you best and you see him in 11 days. In the meantime you may be able to search "weaning off Xanax". Often the pharmaceutical company has a site about weaning off specific medications. |

I doubt that you would have any problems tapering down to .5mg three times a day. Take it morning, noonish, and night. That is such a low dose that I doubt you will have any I'll effects. I tapered myself off Klonopin early this year and I was on 2mg four times a day. I just gradually cut out doses until I was down to one pill everyday, then one every other day. I had no problems with lowering my dose. Do talk to your doc, I am sure he/she will point you in the right direction.
