I need a little input and advice. Today my doctor put me on prozac ( tomorrow morning should be my first day). After coming home and reading all the side effects such as weight gain, low sex drive and sleep troubles. I can not understand why he chose prozac for me beause I told him I have gained 10 pounds in the last couple months, that i have no sex drive and i have suffered insomia for years, along with all the issues i am having. Im upset that I will conitue to gain weight, that ill never sleep again and that with my husband returing home for overseas i will have no interest at all in sex.
If anyone has taken or is on prozac please let me know if these are very common side effects or what you went through while using it. Thank you in advance! Lo |

Ah, Prozac.
 I just started Prozac on Friday. Weight gain, low sex drive and sleep problems are pretty typical symptoms listed for *any* antidepressant. Not everyone will experience those side effects though. But seriously, I don't think I've been on a single antidepressant that doesn't have those side effects listed as possibilities. Honestly, I may not be the best person to talk to because all I'm experiencing right now is nausea from it (don't take it on an empty stomach, eat first!). I'm also surprisingly awake (take this pill in the morning, it's got an 'upping' quality as compared to a sedating antidepressant). But I really have no complaints thus far. Try it out for a month or two until it's actually stable in your system. It's a popular med because it actually works. If you're worried about weight gain, watch your diet especially when on antidepressants. If you have sleep troubles you could take a sleeping pill... not sure what to do about the sex drive thing, but I think there are probably meds for that as well.

Prozac has really helped me with my ocd and depression. I actually lost quite a bit of weight on it. I didn't really need to lose weight, but it kind of suppressed my appetite. I hope it will help you. Give it a little time and if it doesn't seem to be helping let your doctor know and hopefully you can find something that will help.

I know Wellbutrin is added a lot of times to the prozac family meds to counteract the sexual side-effects. not that you're there yet, but just an fyi.

everyone experiences different side effects to those listed. some experience a few on the list, some all, and some people don't experience any.i was on prozac for a year and i had the opposite to insomnia (whatever that may be), it may me sooooo sleepy, to the point where i had to stop taking them.
you really just have to go by trial and error. take them for a while, if you feel it's doing more bad than good ask to be taken off them

prozac unfortunately made me more suicidal/homicidal. it was scary. did not know that that was that causing it til i was taken off. i must be sensitive to meds as ive had only bad experiences.

I've been on prozac for a few days. I'm more angry and short tempered but thats how I used to be before I was depressed. I might be bipolar so maybe thats why I feel overcome with rage. I don't eat as much and I can't sleep. And I have a heightened sex drive. That's my input on Prozac for the day.

Thank you all for your input! I did take my first dose today. So i'm sure ill be seeing some side effects in the near future. But as long as I start feeling better I guess thats what really matters.

I've been on it for two months now and am far less anxious. An upset stomach when I started, but all else is fine since.

I have been on prozac for 3 years and have not had any trouble sleeping. I didn't gain weight either. I was gaining a lot of weight due to my antipsychotic, but when I started prozac I stopped gaining it. I have an increased sex drive which drives me nuts as I am a virgin and single and my personal religious views are against sex outside of marriage. So as others have said everyone experiences different side effects.
Prozac helped me be less depressed originally. My pdoc just increased my dose this week to help with compulsive behavior...we'll see if it works. |
