Hi all,
I sort of posted this in my intro, but thought it was better suited here,
Just wondering how to approach my doctor about medication?
I know its not a fix all and everything but I cant see anyone for therapy for possibly a few months.. I'm not really sure (I've been referred).. and I'm really not coping like this...
I just really can't handle it anymore, and if theres a possibility that something could help then I am so desperate to try it because I have to go to school and get the grades I can't afford any time off anymore...
Any tips on how I can approach this with my doctor? shes lovely and i've known her since I was little, but I just can't talk to anyone anymore, especially about this kind of stuff
Also anyone know how likely it is my school would be told about it if I did get put on medication? and if they'd be okay with it or consider me too much of a liability?
Hugs from:

Well, perhaps you could say that (blank) is so severe it is interfering with your schoolwork and you need immediate relief, can you please prescribe something? You will get a more positive response if you have already called and set up an appointment with the therapist you were refered to. Keep in mind most meds take several weeks to fully work. As for your school knowing, it's none of their business, so if you don't tell them or sign anything giving them access to your medical records, they'll never know anything. Even if they did know, I'm real sure they (legally) can't do anything to you. Hope you feel better!

Just talk to her about it. Tell her you are having difficulty and you would like to try a medication, and ask her what she thinks. If you really don't think you can get the words out, another option is to write it down in a letter before the appointment, hand her the letter, and ask her to read it.

Your school would absolutely never be told about anything related to your health. Your medical records are confidential. Your doctor is not allowed to disclose the fact that you are on medication to anyone without your permission.

Along with telling your Dr " I can't handle it anymore" You need to make sure that you get a complete physical. Your Dr would want to get a complete picture of your overall health and maybe can help you find therapy earlier.

More people then you can imagine are on medications for mood disorders.

At a surgeons appointment, I could not get the words out so he was happy to read my list of questions and answer them, this did ease some of my anxiety.

Yea, you need blood tests and stuff to rule out physical illness especially thyroid issues. Before seeking therapy for depression many people need to get those tests first!

Just tell your doctor you're curious about trying a medication.

I know few people who haven't been on at least an antidepressant at some point!

I'm sure your doctor is used to patients having difficulty telling them about mental issues. I know mine was, I went in originally to have my back looked at but she quickly realized that I had other issues that I really wanted talk about.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you go see your Dr, as soon as you have difficulty talking about what you want to talk about they will know how to lead the discussion into the right area.
