If you have been on Wellbutrin, please tell me:

1) whether you have lost weight
2) what your dosage is
3) if you are bipolar, what drugs, including the dosage, you have been taking to counteract Wellbutrin's tendency to cause (hypo)mania
4) how you are sleeping while on it, whether you suffer from insomnia
5) other effects and side effects of note

I want to try this drug for weight loss. I do not need another AD - my Prozac works very well - but I want to add another AD to see if I can lose some weight.

I was on it about 6 years ago.

1) whether you have lost weight Took it for 8 months gained 10 pounds
2) what your dosage is it was 400mg a day
3) if you are bipolar, what drugs, including the dosage, you have been taking to counteract Wellbutrin's tendency to cause (hypo)mania 400 mg Lamictal a day
4) how you are sleeping while on it, whether you suffer from insomnia It was hit or miss with the sleeping but it always has been for me.
5) other effects and side effects of note I had to quit taking it because of the rage it induced. In the 8 months I took it I'd fractured my arm once, broke my hand once, beat a girl bloody, gotten into more physical altercations than I can count, busted way too many holes in my walls and destroyed more furniture and knickknacks than any one person should in a lifetime. That's not counting the smashed phones. I was just livid all the time. wanted to kill everything around me. The only good side effect was I didn't want to smoke while I was taking it.
Thanks for this!

I have never had a weight issue, so I haven't lost weight, but also didn't put on weight.
It has been the only AD that has worked for me thus far.
I started on 150mg and am now on 300mg.
It does cause a bit of anxiety, but I take Klonopin or Ativan prn.
I am on Sodium Valporate as a mood stabilizer. Wellbutrin must be taken in the morning only, and then there are no issues for me to get to sleep

Before I built up a resistence to it, it really was a good medication.

I. No weight loss or gain.
II. 600mg
III. I am depressed without mania and Borderline, so I don't think this applies to me.
IV. I take two Unisom Natural Sleepaids and four 5mg melatonin. That says more about me, though. Cotton mouth, coordination lapses, and for the first few days you'll feel a bit silly. That's the best word I can think of for what that feeling was like.

For me, it worked. I hope you have a similar effect.

Hamster Bamster,

All this talk about Wellbutrin and weight loss sparked my interest.

Well I decided to get off ALL the other meds I was on, and get on Wellbutrin.

I had put on some weight from Prozac and Seroquel, and from who knows what.. (I was on a lot of different meds.)

So now, I am free and clear of all my other meds for quite some time and I JUST started taking Wellbutrin yesterday,

I talked with my doctor about the topic, since it has been on my mind since you brought it up.
I asked him if I had been manic before. He said no, that it just kept me up, meaning awake.
He is in on this with me, prescribed it to increase my energy and help me lose weight. Since I have a dx on file of depression, it was allowed.

I have started on 75mg/day, but in a day or so I will go up to my prescribed dose of 150mg.
I already notice a difference in my appetite.
I am forgetting to eat, and when I do eat, I don't feel the need to finish my plate.

I currently weigh 147.
My bmi is 27.

Ill try to remember to let you know in a week or so, what my results are... or sooner. or ask me whenever, whatever.

When I took it didn't have any effect on my weight. For the life of me can't remember what the dosage was... I want to say 150. Horrible side effects; I was constantly vibrating and completely unable to be still or sleep, as well as overheating all the time.
Thanks for this!

well, just a check in..
I forget to eat so often that I get very crabby.
I can't sleep well...
Little things are setting me off into rage spells.

I'm gonna continue taking Wellbutrin, because I need to have energy.
But the side effects are bad.
They are mental side effects... probably hypomania.

I might add Lamictal, because this could get kind of dangerous.
I would rather see you, HamsterBamster, try a different, more natural, method to acheive your goal, instead of taking Wellbutrin. Just saying that from one bipolar to another.

1. I've never lost weight because of wellbutrin. I lost weight while on it, but through managing my diet and being able to stop anti-psychotics.
2. I take 300mg.
3. My pdoc would like me to be on lithium, but right now we are just trying the wellbutrin alone. I don't tend to rapid cycle, so we'll see how it goes this time (I have been off meds for a few months until just very recently.)
4. It doesn't affect my sleep.
5. It cause me absolutely no side effects.

I have used the 300xl and that is the only one I would recommend. It is a much more sustained version of the original and sr types. The others just have to much immediate NE activation for me. Commonly used to offset SSRI's side effects- sexual, appetite, apathy and it works quite well for that. Plus the fact that it is a NE and DA reuptake inhibitor makes it a good anti-depressant. Do try to get the xl version, though.

I have been on Wellbutrin for over and year and I have found that it helped me focus a great deal. However, even with adjunct medication I never felt better until recently I quit AD's and started Lamictal. I'm still working up on the Lamictal and my Psych said that it's often not enough and she may want to add 'Butrin back in if I still feel a little down. If I have to add an AD, wellbutrin will be the first choice anyway.

1.) I lost a lot of weight prior to starting wellbutrin because of the depression/anxiety making me too sick to eat. About a week into the treatment I began to eat again but
I never gained any weight back until remeron and effexor (and, you know, I gained that stuff back and then more!) It's possible wellbutrin kept me at the lower weight, but it could have also been because of my unintentional diet.

2.) Started three days at 50, up to 100, 150, longest time at 300, 400 at a point where I fell into a worse depression, and then back to 200mg for a couple months. I think if I start it again I will be on a lower dose.

3.) Not until this summer did my Psych become convinced that I'm likely Bipolar 2. So I have been on different AD's and never felt better, just different or worse. I don't believe I have pronounced hypomania, but I also get anxious along with being depressed and sometimes have very intense bouts of anxiety.

4.) When I started taking it my sleep just never improved -- 3 or 4 hours of frustrating, restless sleep. However, my sleep seems to follow the seasons and during the winter I was sleeping more and the Wellbutrin did not stop that.

5.) XL seems like placebo compared to SR.All dosages seemed to be accompanied by an uncomfortable caffeinated feeling an hour or so after taking it.
Thanks for this!

I have taken Wellbutrin for several years for ADHD.

I have taken doses varying from 100 mg to 300 mg daily. I currently take 100 mg SR--a low dose.

I have not lost weight.

I sleep fine.

My only side effect has been tremor of my hands. This was more pronounced at 300 mg. I'm not a surgeon so my PNP said just live with it since the med was helping. At my current dose of 100 mg, the tremor is rarely present.
