When lithium wasn't in style anymore a lot of doctors switched their patients over to tegretol + often one more mood stabilizer to reach the same stabilizing effect you get from lithium but altogether feeling better. Next generation tegretol is trileptal. I know some successes with this, but also cases where it didn't work out at all. You could ask your doc if this would be possible for you.
