I agree. Why can't they just run a diagnostic like they do for my car and then tell me how to fix it??

Because, like with every illness we can treat, companies make far more money treating people for their whole lives as opposed to curing them. Making money is more important than curing disease. Sorry.

Would be nice to have a cure. Since every ones Mental illness is so unique I don't think there will ever be a cure.
I do agree about big pharma..( boo hiss) I do think everyone needs to be proactive about there treatment and deciding what medications you are willing to take. Our diet can have a huge impact on how we feel.

^ That documentary might have some motives to be wary of.
I understand the frustration of wishing it would leave you alone and give you your life back. There's a lot of chronic illnesses out there that we don't have cures for yet--some common, treatable ones: asthma, diabeties, thyroid disfunction, other hormonal disorders. You can treat the symptoms but not the mechanism that causes the disease so if you stop treatment, it returns. It sucks and forces us to make trade off about side effects and potential long-term damage. I don't think the base knowledge about mental illness existed long enough for there to be a cure. Yeah, pharm. companies make a ton of money, lobby the government, selectively show studies that portray them in a better light. We're not going to (easily) know the truth about psychotropic drugs because of capitalism. People make profits from stuff; that's how our society works. (on a side not, chronic illness tend to get more common and worse as society "advances" because of industrialization, increased competition, etc. so if you are unlucky enough to fall into that catagory, you really get screwed twice). It's our individualistic, profit-based society's fault. Pharm. companies won't let go of their profits easily, but there are researchers, activists and ordinary people who care. There will be significant strides in the treatment and care of mental illness in our lifetime.
