I'm prescribed stimulants as an adjunct to my antidepressants to help give me motivation/energy. I've tried many different ones (e.g. adderall, ritalin, concerta, focalin, vyvanse, provigil),but they all make me nauseous. I realize that everyone responds differently to meds, but I was wondering if anyone had any luck with stimulants that didn't cause nausea.

Thanks!

Not sure, I have a strong stomach. Only advice I can throw out is to take the meds. after eating something. And, perhaps the weaker stims. modafinil might go down easier. Another idea would be to split the pill and spread it out over an hr or two. As long as the med, isn't an extended release med., that should be taken all at once.

Food like grapefruit juice can skew enzymes in your stomach and alter the effects of meds. Also, the ph balance in the stomach effects it as well.

Thanks for your feedback! I'm SO jealous you have a strong stomach - mine hates me! I've tried splitting my pills but it hasn't helped and I always take my meds with food. I'll talk to my psychiatrist about modafinil though - I've never heard of that one. Thanks!

I've only been taking Wellbutrin for a few weeks now but I find it gives me more energy/motivation. And it makes me really sensitive to caffeine, so just a little bit of coffee gives me a buzz.

Wellbutrin is a good anti-depressant with stimulating qualities, due to it's reuptake inhibition of norepinephrine.

If they generally cause nausa you probably have an intolerance. I would ask your pdoc if there is any testing you can do to verify the intolerance.

Have you been to your regular doc to see if you have any thyroid or vitamin (B's especially but D also) deficiencies or problems? My energy has been helped enormously by getting blood tests every so often and keeping up with my nutritional and additional vitamin/mineral needs.

I have very sensitive stomach & taken Dexedrine (long acting)for years.
It's an older stimulant but works for me.
Hope you feel better soon.

I've tried Wellbutrin a few years ago but it made me really nauseous too I really hate how sensitive my stomach is. I hope it's working well for you though!

I've been tested for gluten intolerance and it came back negative. I can ask my pcp about other tests though. Thanks!

That's a good idea! I'll definitely ask my pcp about that. I'm so glad it has helped you a lot!

My pdoc tried prescribing that to me but none of the pharmacies around where I live had it in stock. That was many months ago, so I'll talk to him about maybe getting another prescription. I'm glad it works for you!

Honestly id try caffeine, not in pill form. It has a relatively short half life so it leaves your body quicker. It can cause nausea but your body builds a quick tolerance to this. Also dependency from caffeine isn't a huge deal as withdrawal effects wont last long (maybe 2 weeks max). You can build a tolerance to the jittery effect somewhat quickly, but you generally wont build a huge tolerance to the increase in focus. Keep it to 250mgs a day max, that's like 2-3 cups of coffee depending on the strength. It seems primitive but I have found that it works.
