Hello...

I have just recently been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder... That's not the issue, but the notion that I have been going to psychs for ages and tried heaps of meds (SSRI's, MAO's, mood stabilisers...) but I have terrible side effects (suicidal thoughts, paranoia, anxiety)... Any experiences of bad side effects from meds and having BPD?

I think the main meds given for BPD are to help keep a person calm. I used to take anti-depressants. And I have had anti-anxiety meds. They have some bad effects, but nothing extreme. However, I did have to go through a bunch before I found some that worked best. None actually "cure."

Has your therapist mentioned DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy)? It is considered a great approach for helping with this problem--but the patient has to be motivated and follow through on the homework assignments.
Thanks for this!

Ola!

Yep, DBT is on the list, I am starting next week... I did a massive amount of CBT and it helped me heaps, but I believe that my anxiety is just a side effect of my BPD, so can't wait to shake it up with some DBT

I was actually devastated when I was told I had BPD. That was years ago. It can be treated, but, as I say, it takes a lot of work on the patient's part.

When I look back, I cringe at all the bad things I said and did to people, not aware that I was in the wrong. The main thing is to try to see where our behaviors get off track, because we are overreacting, caused by past experiences such as being abandoned/abused, etc.

I get the "flashbacks" too about events and things that I have done in the past due to BPD, but on the other hand I can see that I didn't know any other way, it was my mind set at that time and a reaction as you said of a abused/abandoned individual... I believe (cause I haven't gained the skills to manage my BPD properly) that I will probably still hurt many people but on a lighter scale than I used too...

Sometimes I wonder how lucky I am that I'm still here on this planet...
