I agreed with my Dr. that on Mon., I'd try to start tapering down my klonopin (clonazapam) with a view to getting off it comepletely. We're going down very slowy 0.5 mg weekly. I currently take 5 mg daily. I'm very worried about it, because I know I've run out of it a couple of times, and the withdrawal was horrible, but I'm hoping with the slow taper it'll be better. Plus I'll be in hospital for the next 2 weeks, so at least it'll be monitored.

Anyone have any advice?

Going to start tapering off Klonopin

Hi Split,

I went off of klonapin once and it was bad. I tapered too fast. I did this without the help of my doc. My hands shook so bad, I had to hide them by sitting on them. I would take 200 mg of benadryl to try and deal with the anxiety. If you don't mind, why doesn't your doc want you off K?

Going down .5 once a week may be too fast for you. DON'T BE AFRAID TO TELL YOUR DOC. Try not to let them put you on another benzo It'd probably help if you take stuff to counteract withdrawal symptoms that you might get. (Like something for nausea)

The last .5 will be the worst.

5mg a day is a lot. I'm on klonopin, but have never gone off it. I think going from 5mgs to 0.5mgs may give you withdrawal. Talk to your doctor.

dropping by 0.5 is not too big of a drop to make weekly if the daily dose is 5mg at this point.

Good luck

When kicked Ativan my pdoc, switched me to Klonopin part of the way through because of the longer half life. It's not easy, but it does pass. Just take your time and taper slowly. Good luck!

I had a 12 mg ativan a day addiction stopped cold by a stupid shrink. After convultions and a suicide attempt he had an idea he could have been wrong , i was given by my gp 100mg a day valium which never even registered . He gave me back 4 mg a day ativan the most the surgery would supply. So in reality i withdrew 8mg a day ativan. Yes and im still hear writeing this post 6 years on . i spent 6 month shut away in my room banging my head against the wall, but stranger things do happen. My still 4mg a day work perfect now 2mg 6am 2 mg 9pm no craveings everything is cool . My advice would be that detox of yours is to fast, I dont think after 4mg of a strong benzo you will ever be free , why would you, if you have anxierty something has to control it.
