In the winter I have horrible mania with huge aggression and psychosis. He wants me on another anti psychotic which I agree with, but I think I also need another mood stabilizer. Do patients take a mood stabilizer for a brief period of time and anti psychotics for a brief time of treatment? Would these be short term or prns?

I am currently taking 200mg of lamictal for bipolar and a small dose of risperdal since I have delusions and hallucinations year round. I still have them, but they aren't as crippling as they used to be. I don't want a higher dose of either since this balances me out for most of the year and I would hate to disrupt that homeostasis. Any thoughts/experiences would be great to hear

Yes, I'm on 2 mood stabilizers and 2 antipsychotics. I think they all work together to help my mood and psychosis........D.

I have heard of some people taking antipsychotics PRN. But I don't think that they are PRN for psychosis.

It's not unheard of for people to be taking more than one antipsychotic. I am currently taking two right now as well. But I'd say if you think that two may be too many you can always talk to your pdoc. I think when people take two it is because one antipsychotic may be working well for psychosis, while another may be working well for other symptoms. Or, one may work for psychosis but side effects are too bad at a high dose, so adding another antipsychotic to help the one at a low dose seems to work.
Thanks for this!

I'm on 2 antipsychotics. 1 to augment my antidepressants, and one for anxiety.

I have the mania also... all the time.... and aggression.... I take depakote, pamelor, and latuda!! This combination works well for me! Sometimes it takes a bit of adjusting... it took me two months to get this combination. Good Luck!
