Ive just finished my first week of my first dose of celexa and my anxiety is sky high. Its also making me very jumpy and uncontrollable twitching and arm jerks.
I heard a beep on the street late last night (a quiet little pip!) and i absolutely jumped out of my skin! Same thing happened today when a pea rolled on the floor off someones dinner plate - thought i was going to die! WTH!

Im just wondering what other people have experienced whilst on this? The anxiety is forcing my self injury side out of me

I started celexa about a month ago and experienced the same exact thing! Every time someone even said my name or I heard a noise I jumped just like that, It was really bad for the first few weeks but has calmed down quite a bit now. I hope it does for you too
Thanks for this!

The first few weeks on an SSRI for anyone susceptible to anxiety are extremely rough. There is a lot of start-up anxiety that may be more intense than you have experienced before and unfortunately it causes a lot of individuals to quit the therapy before giving it a fair try. Within a week or two it will subside, and surviving through that time might prove to have big pay offs in the end.

I've been on fluoxetine just before these for a few weeks but i suffer with manic episodes as well and it was just too intense for me to continue with. Doc think these ones wont bring out that side of me as much. So the anxiety has been present for about a month now, not sure if its worse because of the transition period between the two. I hope these are worth sticking out for, my jaw is killing me ive noticed as well either from tension or grinding in my sleep

Have you spoken to the pharmacist or your pdoc, to see if these are within the normal ranges of side effects of the med?

Sounds like a stress reaction, less anxiety. I've been a jump out of my skin type, more so when younger, but if lost in thought and startled, I may. I don't recall this on citalopram. Are you also in therapy?

Ask for a Benzo while you get used to the med to calm anxiety, like ATIVAN for short treatment

Simple you putting a drug in your body that' not usually there , so your brain and body ajust to it and changes appear. Usually you feel a lot worse than you was before start up , its up to you weather you can ride the storm to the end. IF not don't embark an a voyage to help if you carnt take side effects, s . Really bad depression is worth all the side effects to reach RELEAF

What is strange to me is what happends after 4 weeks? what I mean is if citalopram takes a week to reach a sustained level in your blood, it makes sense that some of the side effects last for a week (headache, drowsiness, insomnia). But what happens for the next two weeks before it has an effect on anxiety?

I take citalopram and I was VERY anxious for the first week or two, but it absolutely works now to decrease my anxiety (i am in therapy, too)
Thanks for this!

Cheers for the input guys.

Im back in therapy as of next week. Doctor didnt say anything about the increased anxiety as a side effect i just remember him warning me about tummy ache - and my stomach has been perfectly fine!

Ive almost completed two weeks on them, anxiety isnt as bad so we will just see what week 3 is like. I dont want to give them up just yet I kind of expected some kind of horrible side effect with it, i was hallucinating on fluoxetine at least it isnt as bad as that was!
