I have been on lamotrigine for about 3 years now in combination with another medication and it worked very well. Eventually, it's stopped working to a point were the depression is almost unbearable
I finally got a psychiatrist after 3 years of searching and she said that I am prone to seizures now that I've been on these meds if I off them too fast? And turns out she's replacing the lamotrigine with topomax (similar medication) I'm just feeling a little irritated,as no one told me this when I was prescribed the lamotrigine. Anyone else had any similar experiences? Thanks! |

That's weird! I take lamotrigine also. How does your doctor know you are prone to seizures? If I don't take mine on time I get a headache and my head gets all tingly feeling. Idk if that's related to seizures...

Lots of psych meds are known to induce seizures if one comes off them too quickly. That doesn't mean that the person will continue to have sz's. If a person has epilepsy, however, it could be a very dangerous situation though. A possibility of status epilepticus is very real indeed. {Status epilepticus - a life threatening neurological state in which a person has a non-stop seizure for 30 minutes or more.} Some psych meds have a higher percentage of possibility of inducing sz's. Generally, pDoc's won't try those meds on those who have epilepsy.
One has to weigh the serious risks. That's why they make the big bucks . ![]()

Hey manicplanet- sorry to hear...yeah I think getting off any anti-convulsant could possible cause a seizure. I find Lamictal only works for me at 600mg and then I need to take an AAP, like Latuda with it too keep me stable, but that's because I'm bipolar. Best of luck and I hope Topamax works well for you!

I hope topamax works well for you. I lost 13 lbs on it, but had to stop due to an itchy rash.
