Hi all, I have Major Depression and was well controlled and living a normal life while on Zoloft until this past April, when it seemed to stop working overnight. My family doc upped the dosage with no results, then sent me to a psychiatrist to get the help with meds I needed. I was put on Viibryd and after about 2.5 months no effect on my depression, then I was put on Lexapro after that with no results yet and a dosage increase of Lexapro with no real results yet after about a month. My question is once an SSRI stops working like Zoloft do all SSRI's not work or is it just that one that doesn't work anymore and we need to tinker around again to find another one that works or is it better to switch classes of meds or try a booster medicine with the SSRI? I just wondering everyone's experiences with this so I can have some dialogue with my psychiatrist when I go back in about a month if the increased Lexapro dosage doesn't take a hold soon. Thank you for your help and support.

I have been on several drugs including Zoloft, that worked for a time and then quit working. And while one SSRI doesn't another might do the trick. Can't tell until you try them. Booster meds such as Abilify do help some people. Trust you doctor or if you don't trust his judgement get a second opinion.

Unfortunately it happens and no one knows why either.

Hey mgracer13-great question! My answer is from my experience that each SSRI works a little differently but eventually they all "poop out." I have to alter my med cocktail quite often to feel okay, but I'm bipolar which is different than having MDD. You might ask your pdoc about adding Aplenzin, or Welbutrin SR in combination with Zoloft then trying Vibriid or an SNRI, like Cymbalta, before adding an AAP like Abilify or Latuda. I'd make sure they're weight neutral before you start them. All the best!!

I have had antidepressants "poop out". When it has happened I have switched antidepressant with great results. I was first on Paxil I got severe side effects and the it stoped working. I went though a terible withdrawl when I had what the drug companies call discontinuation syndrome. I went on Celexa and then lexapro. Lexapro stopped working and I am currently on Zoloft which has worked well along with Wellbutrin. I am also on Abilify which works great for me, but has made me gain weight that I cannot seem to lose even with daily exercise and diet. I hope this helped and I hope you find relief from depression soon.
