Hi everyone. I went to the psychiatrist for the first time today and got prescribed prozac. I was just wondering if you saw side effects, what were they, how long did they last? I'm also wondering if they made you gain weight? Also, how long did they take to work? I am mainly on them for GAD, so did they help anxiety?

I take Prozac for anxiety and OCD. The only side effect I noticed was being tired. It seemed to last a long time for me, but everyone is different. It also could have just been me, as I have always needed a lot of sleep to function. The meds really did help with anxiety and panic. I have anxiety over a phobia of vomiting which caused me to completely avoid eating. I would eat very little at a time and even go days without food. I developed an aversion to eating and I would get so anxious that I wouldn't be able to swallow. This caused me to drop 20 lbs in a short period of time. I'm 5'1", female, and had weighed about 115lbs prior to this disorder, but ended up dropping down to 91lbs. Once I began Prozac, the anxiety over eating greatly reduced and I was able to eat again more normally. I still struggle at times but I would say my situation improved tremendously.

I had the exact opposite of hermitix. The first days on Prozac I was edgy and restless. It didn't take too long to work. No weight change. I'm sure they must have helped w/ anx eventually but not nearly as much as clonazepam.

Do you happen to be bipolar? If so, antidepressants can cause symptoms of mania or hypomania in some people. Feeling edgy and restless can be part of bipolar disorder, but those side effects don't necessarily mean you have that.

I went straight from one SSRI to Prozac(another SSRI) and have seen my depression lift somewhat and pretty quickly. I'm still on a very low dosage so he may raise it. I can't really tell I've had any side affects. I still take Klonopin for anxiety.

Everyone's different, but typically Prozac can cause slow weight gain. It will start to work in 2 weeks, by then the common side effects should were off. I'd double check with a pharmacist if you have any questions.

I was less depressed and I lost about 25 pounds. Twenty years later it still helps keep me stable, although I now take other meds as well.

Prozac was my first AD many many years ago, i did put on weight after a time but that,s because my anxiety was helped has well has depression with PROZAC i wasnt burning off calories like when i had anxiety. That is one good thing about anxiety you will never be fat, Prozac actually took 12 weeks to work on me, all that time i was really ill but i stuck with it and one day over night it changed my life . The world suddenly came to life and i was actually happy .

How long were you on it , like i said I was ill for 12 weeks before it worked , I was desperate for some relief after years so I stuck it out through the pain , I was on the verge of giving up when it kicked in I started on 20mg and that's all I ever took
