I've been prescribed Lamictal a little over a month ago after a seizure I had. It was the second one in my 18 years of life, but my doctor still felt more comfortable giving the prescription to me. My MRI and EEG came back fine too. But so far things have gone fine. I started at 25mg twice a day and have slowly increased to 50mg in the morning and 100mg at night. I started that dosaged 4 days ago, and the past 3 I've been bobbing and jerking my head to the sides. I feel like I have to do it to get rid of the uncomfortable feeling. It's like that feeling you get before a body chill but it's only in my head. I don't want to call my doctor about it yet because it could be unrelated. I've had "coping" tics before when under stress so I wonder if that could be it? Even though I don't feel very stressed at all right now. I don't have Tourette's syndrome, I know that for sure.

Hi wookiegoldfur

I am also on Lamotrigine.

I do not personally experience head bobbing/jerking - but I wanted to let you know I did I bit of researching on the internet after I read your post.

I am certainly not a qualified medical practitioner - I am just a regular PC member like you - but based on what I have read I have reason enough to believe that yes a possible side effect could be tourettes.

Whether or not your head bobbing/jerking is tourettes, I am unsure. As I am not qualified to interpret this.

But you do not seem to be the only person with a head bobbing/jerking side effect.

Hope this helps.

You could have an undiagnosed tic disorder (might not be tourrettes) that's being exacerbated by the new med.

I don't think this is a traditional tic disorder because what you are describing seems to present itself when you are taking medication. You have probably had it before because other medications caused the same side effect. Tics under psych meds are actually quite common! It would be advisable to discuss the issue with your doctor and pharmacist to see if this is a side effect of any medications you are currently taking.

This is the first time I've ever been on a psych medication. So I feel like it's a little hard to tell if it's related or not...?

If you've had tics before taking psych meds that's why I think you might have an undiagnosed tic disorder.

the best thing to do is discuss this with your doctor. I am also on Lamictal and don't have that side effect.
