Yes. It is *pain*fully true that lithium causes stomach upset.
Unfortunately, even when I take it with food, it still makes my tummy mad. It may be because I have IBS. Maybe not. I don't know. Am I the only one?

Anyway. Are there any ways to minimize that? Does it help to eat more food? Or certain kinds of food?

I wish I could help, Stronger. Maybe your psychiatrist, your doctor, or a pharmacist might have some ideas.

At any rate, I hope your tummy and lithium will make peace soon.
Thanks for this!

Hi Stronger, my PDoc just increased my lithium dose and my stomach is completely messed up. I used to take the lithium in the AM, now I take it when I go to bed. I take it with water followed by a small glass of chocolate soy milk. This seems to help. If I take the lithium with the soy milk it still makes my stomach upset. Strange, I know.

The only reason I do the soy chocolate milk is because sometimes I don't tolerate milk. The first few days before I got the routine down I was following the lithium with antacids.

I agree with Traveling Lady, I will be sharing my observations and adjustments with the PDoc.

Good luck!

I hear you on the stomach aches I get them night and day I take my morning ones with a pack of pop tarts and I think cause of all the starches it help tone it down a little. The plus side of this is I have lost over thirty pounds cause of this. Good luck.

Hey Stronger-

I'm not sure if you are taking the tablets or capsules of lithium, but it comes in both formulations. In theory, the capsules are easier on the stomach than the tablets because they are coated, etc. however I actually found the opposite to be true [which makes no sense even to me].

My suggestion would be to ask your doctor and pharmacist about this- it may be worth it to at least try the other formulation for a few days.
Thanks for this!
