provigil was something we covered in t.

its used for chronic fatigue, narcolepsy(sp) and so on. its another drug used for clearer thinking, energy, etc...

has anyone tried it?
good or bad results? it can be habit forming, which worries me a lot!! i never sleep well, therefore i'm always super tired and in a horrible fog.

any thoughts?

I take 200 mg in the morning, and I suppose it helps.

I have taken it for about 3 yrs to help with the fatigue I feel in the AM from my evening med, clozaril. Provigil ( as stimulant)

Seems like a vicious circle with these types of meds and I am thinking of getting off them all together........oh well..

I hope provigil works for you!! Good luck Provigil ( as stimulant)

It is OK. Not really addictive at all, and I find it often causes most of my patients more problems than benefits. If someone really needs some waking up I use Adderall.

I've taken 400 mg of Provigil & 72 mg of Concerta (as well as a bunch of other drugs for bp) for about 5 years & I have had no neg. side effects from the Provigil or Concerta. I don't think I could function without them. I haven't had to increase my dosage of either of them in all that time. I can have motivation to do things & enough energy to accomplish stuff during the day , which I didn't before.

A few other things to consider for low energy--I also have low thyroid, pernicious anemia--both of them cause fatigue & depression. That's all I needed on top of my bp, but I take meds for both of those conditions. Having a thorough physical is important to rule out other conditions.--Suzy

I take 200 mg in the morning for severe MS fatigue and it does help, although sometimes I think it makes me anxious, OK, more anxious, LOL. But without it I am so tired.

dr.s

dr. scott,

would you please tell me the problems?
why do you choose adderall?

i just began taking provigil, but if the other is more effective, may as well try it before spending a ton of money on provigil.

thank you for being here and sharing your professional information with us.

Doc - I'm curious too, about what problems your patients have experienced with Provigil. I'm supposed to start taking this soon because my doc thinks Adderall will be too stimulating and result in more mania. It takes a ton of drugs to knock me out each night without which I would not sleep at all (which leads to more mania). But with everything it takes to knock me out, I have a bear of a time waking up.

I'm supposed to take the Provigil first thing after the alarm goes off - assuming I hear the alarm. Maybe I can get my spouse to poke it into my mouth and it will pop me out of bed. I really need something to switch me on, but I don't want to waste my time on Provigil if Adderall would be more effective or if Provigil causes more problems than solutions.

Oh, how I love the crazy meds dance. I think they call it bipolar because you have to take drugs to knock you out then take the opposite ones to wake you up Provigil ( as stimulant)

Sorry, I missed this one. Provigil seems to make people more edgy and cranky at the doses it takes to work as a stimulant. I have found just a little 5-10 mg of adderall xr to be much less problematic in general. However, for bipolar both are sorta iffy IMO. Adderall is mixed amphetamine salts and basically causes uninhibited release of all neurotransmitters which wakes us up, makes us feel good etc... Provigil is much more selective in its action, and usually just wakes people up w/o the feel good part, and that is why it is less addictive.

thanks so much for clearing that up.

being severely depressed, i'm sure i would "love" the "feel good" feeling of adderall. perhaps provigil is the way to go for now. i've been paranoid of addiction....never dealt with it personally, but it runs heavily through the family blood.

adderall could be used for "emergency" purposes.
hmmmmm, something else to talk over with my dr.

thanks again.
