Hey, all:

I'm starting low-dose Abilify for my anxiety and outbursts of out-loud self-criticism. Good news is, it makes it easier to stop those. Bad news: I feel like a semi-zombie. I've taken four 200mg caffeine pills on top of my usual two morning Pepsi's today, and barely feel them. And I'm slowed down a bit at work.

(1) Does this go away, and if so, after how long?

(2) Must I choose between being a zombie and a monster? (Will be trying to set up with one of two therapists soon.)

(3) Can I look forward to spending my whole life simulating happiness for others' benefit and never genuinely feeling it?

I don't know about Abilify personally but when I took Celexa for anxiety and depression it definitely dulled my emotions. Almost like a zombie and I was so tired I had to go on Ritalin to stay awake. The tiredness never went away on Celexa. I eventually got off it and Ritalin and felt like a human being again. Although now I am trying to treat the depression again... It's a viscous cycle.

This may go away for you but it may not, in which case you may have to decide which state of living gives you a better quality of life. I personally prefer to feel happy than to pretend for others. Alternatively you could try another med.

Why Abilify? I am curious why so many pdocs are prescribing so many antipsychotics these days.

It's amazing how different medications effect different people differently. I'm on Abilify and a small dose as well - I'm up by 7AM and a little anxious throughout the day.
I'm thinking of changing meds. My husband has been on it for 8 yrs. and works great for him. I'd say, switch meds. Something else will work better. Wish you well.

I just started Abilify too - about 2 weeks ago. I know exactly what you are going through. All I do is sleep and try to get through work so I can go home and sleep. The thing is I find it is doing wonders for my anxiety, frustration, and outbursts, but has done little to nothing for my depression.

I was on abilify for a year as an augmenter for depression. I didn't notice anything good or bad with it.

I too don't understand why they prescribe so many AAP's for anxiety and sleep. I'd rather take a benzo for anxiety even with the problems they have.

I'm on a very low dose of Abilify to take the edge off my anger/irritability outbursts. When the dosage was higher I felt too flat and like I was excruciatingly bored. We lowered the dose and I feel more human again, but still have some edge taken off my more problematic traits. Good luck to you.

I am on 40mgs of Abilify and have no lasting side effects from it. I have been at this dose for over a year and feel great. The side effects that I did have were akathsia and that was at the low dose. Once my system got used to it, it went away. I don't remember being zombie like at all. Now that I have put myself on a sleep/wake cycle, I feel that the Abilify is working even better for me.

Hey, I'd make sure you're on the right dose and see if your pdoc will give you some Nuvigil or Provigil! Best of luck!

While there are multiple reasons it can be sedating, the most likely one is because it blocks the Histamine 1 receptor in the human brain and this can cause sedation.

Good news is it often goes a way in a couple of weeks, especially if your on a low dose.
