I've been on zoloft for 18 years and I guess I'm lucky that it helped me this long but I'm having mood swings irritability some depression and panic attacks again. so right at this point I dont have a general practitioner or family doc, ..lots of specialty docs but the family doctor i was seeing accused me of trying to get an extra xanax script when actually SHE never faxed it in...I was furious, Ive been on it a long time but a bottle of 90 1mg will last me close to 6 month, although right now Im take 2 50mg a day because of issues... anyway i ask my OB if he would call in something and told him I read about effexor xr, I was able to get it with the companies choice card for 30 bucks a savings of 290.00 but Im so scared to try it. I have a counselor I see for free because Im not working right now and they have a GP come around once a month. I don't have insurance, So Im going to wait til I see him to decide what to do about the med. there may be something else he wants me to try instead... Im scared of the switch because I dont know some say just to switch straight out some say not to, and I think I will feel better waiting on him to guide me and monitor me. the pharmacist said reduce the zoloft but I dont want to have more panic because there is nothing else in my system...

Any recommendations of meds to ask or talk to him about besides effexor? I dont know what all new ones are... but I used to be agoraphobic and I never wanna go that far in a downward spiral again. I am doing the counseling and CBT too
Thanks for this!

Hi there, I was on Effexor for a very short period it raised my blood pressure so I never really got to see how it worked.. That is a good long run you had with Zoloft.. Reason I responded I had bad agoraphobia too house bound pretty much. Panic disorder , GAD, depression. I am not on anything right now although I do have a script to start.. What worked for me with the above issues for years was Celexa.. It's been outa long time don't know if it's it's a generic form yet but it was relatively inexpensive where I am. So I would think it would be a lower cost wherever you are. It help me along with CBT to get over agoraphobia , GAD and my depression. I would have the odd severe panic attack but I also have Ativan for those cases. All the best

Wow you really got a good run out of Zoloft! Congrats. I couldn't take Zoloft because it makes me itch, never tried effexor because of all the stories I've heard about side effects. I was on Celexa for 11 years (citalopram is the generic). It pretty much knocked out my depression, anxiety, and agoraphobia. Might be a good option but always best to talk to a doctor before switching from one med to another.

Good luck!
