I was prescribed 50mg of trazodone for sleep. The first time I took it I woke up with the worst headache, and it eventually turned into a migraine. I get migraines regularly but this was the worst one that I have ever had; complete with motion sickness, sensitivity to light, and vomiting. I felt awful the entire day, so I didn't take it again.
So fast forward to 3 weeks later, for my followup pdoc appointment, which was yesterday. She wasn't really happy that I stopped taking the trazodone. She suggested that I cut it in half. I tried it last night and I still feel like I have a hangover, but it's not as bad as before. I am on leave from my job but that ends 9/11. I need to be able to get up to go to work, and I could barely get up at 10am this morning. (I usually start my work shifts at 8am) How long does the hangover effect usually last? |

Sorry to hear, my guess would be that the hang over would last about a week or so, but double check with a pharmacist.

I take trazodone for sleep though not every night but it takes 50-100 mg to get me to sleep...but yeah I have gotten sort of a hang over feeling from it, not really so much a headache but either way I find some coffee or caffeine containing tea seems to help.
Trazodone is not the only sleep med though, so if it causes you problems then perhaps your pdoc would consider a different one. anti-histimines work for some people without much trouble....but for me they are essentially useless and more make me irritable than anything.

I was under the impression that you had to take it every day. Like you, I don't need it every night. Wellbutrin is the AD that I was prescribed, but it was the instant release version: 75mg twice a day. The second dose it what keeps me up. So the lack of sleep was the reason why trazodone was brought into play. My pdoc just prescribed the extended release version so we'll see how that goes.
Thanks for your reply Hellion. |

I was on trazodone for a very long time, for falling asleep. I would sleep until 11 AM and sometimes later. I just couldn't shake that "hangover" feeling, but I thought it was just me being lazy or depressed. Then, I realized how dizzy I was when I tried to get up in the middle of the night, so I went off of it. I've felt a whole lot better ever since. I can't remember whether or not I was on the extended release.

I've been on it for several years, when I first started it I had the hangover feeling, but now I don't. But I don't have migrants or anything like that. Sounds like it could be a nerological complication. My vote is that if its too uncomfortable don't take it. There are a lot of thing you can take for sleep. Short term meletoni use can help you reset your sleep, and benadryl and other herbal medications can also be effective. Sleep should be comfortable, so I say just find something that works for you.

Trazodone has a penchant for creating headaches/migraines. I rarely have either and if I take over 25mg to go to sleep I will be groggy and head-achey for most of the following day.

I took it on and off over the years for sleep. What I didn't like was that it knocked me out in fifteen minutes and I had a groggy hang over. No head ache though.
I take Remeron now and like it much much better. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
