Has anyone else gained weight on this medication? Weight gain is not listed as a side effect and my psychiatrist says it should not make me gain weight. However, I have gained 12 pounds in the past two months!! I am taking it with Wellbutrin, so I would hate to see what it would do to me if I was taking it with a different med. Wellbutrin is the only anti-depressant out of at least a dozen I have tried over the years that works well for me, but I'm still not at 100%.

Hi, SharonSharonSharon. I took Trileptal and didn't notice that side effect. I think I was taking Wellbutrin at the same time. I think it can even cause weight loss, but I am not sure.

It's mainly the antidepressants that can cause weight gain.

Could it be that you are someone who eats under stress? I know I do.

Thank you for your response. I have not been eating under stress, which is why the weight gain is so puzzling. I know that similar drugs can cause weight gain, but Trileptal is not supposed to. This is why I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.

I have not taken it, but I mentioned Tegretol to the P-doc as an idea, to replace Li and hoping for a weight neutral effect, and she told me that one can gain weight on Tegretol. And, Trileptal is related to Tegretol; either it is a derivative or a form of it, but it is related to it. So I would think that what holds true for Tegretol might also hold true for Trileptal.
