I've just started taking the above mentioned medication for bipolar depression, and would like to know about the side effects that should be a cause for concern.

Racing thoughts, sleeplessness, etc. Typical signs of early mania, or hypomania in your case. Are you on a mood stabilizer as well or and antipsychotic? That's typically taken in conjunction with an antidepressant for Bipolar to keep you from tipping into mania.

That's what i was going to say.
Watch for mania or hypo mania.
Are you on a mood stabilizer?

The most common side effect are sexual ones. Most people get that one.

Other side effects and how effective it is for you is anyone's guess. We can't tell you what to expect because we are all so different in how we metabolize them and how we react to them. It's a try it and see process.

The doctor didn't prescribe me a mood stabilizer, partly because of my long history of depression. I suppose he wanted to see what is going to happen without the addition of other medication. Whether or not this is a good idea, I have no clue.

I have taken Paxil for years and I love it. I was reluctant to go back on it after a horrible withdraw due to a short break from it , but am happy to have it back. I was also prescribed this particular AD because of sever depression and ptsd. I do have some manic episodes even with a mood stabilizer. Stay away from caffeine until you get used to it. You should mention a mood stabilizer or sleep med once you get adjusted.

To provide an update on this, I'd say that Paxil has thus far had little effect on my depression, caused psychomotor agitation, and possibly induced a hypomanic state.

I'm going to add to 'most common side effects', interdose SSRI withdrawal.. Paxil's really fallen out of favor because it's got a short duration of action and one of the worst abrupt discontinuation syndromes for SSRIs in the book.

I did withdraw from 80 of it once after it stopped working, and I felt like I was falling down an elevator shaft every second of being awake while being electrocuted through my eyeballs and sweating like Evander Holyfield in round 4.

It -WAS- a really, really effective medication, but it kept losing potency and I ended up way above the MFR max dose (this was in the 90's right when it came out).. and it still just stopped working.
