I started Zyprexa about a month ago and it has improved my mental state, I can sit still and read now, and think fairly clearly but I still have a lot of anxiety and some suicidal ideation. My pdoc prescribed buspirone but I don't think it helps. I think it might be a good idea to up my zyprexa intake, I'm on a light dose of 5mg, but I'm scared of the weight gain associated with the drug.
What are your experiences with zyprexa?

I found Zyprexa to be -super- helpful in low doses for severe agitation and panic, but I couldn't really recommend that anyone be on it long term w/o a psych's direction.
Strange thing is that I -do- have a functional dopamine dysfunction, and yet olanzapine is something I'd actually want a few 5's around of. I think it's got something to do with inverse activity at low doses.. apparently it works to reduce parkinson's symptoms, and the last, last, last drug you'd want to take with PD is any antipsychotic. Drugs is weird. |

When I was prescribed it I couldn't sleep and I kept forgetting to eat, I lost weight and I was very agitated, fidgety and overwhelmed, I couldn't even concentrate long enough to read a paragraph. I felt frozen with so much energy bursting inside me! It's helped me a lot I feel like I'm almost half normal; just mildly depressed and still anxious.
drugs are weird indeed! I guess I will take it up with my pdoc when I see her in December.

It felt really 'heavy' at first, (like it was shutting my brain off) but then I got used to it. I gained quite a bit of weight on it though, which is something I'm looking to remedy with diet and exercise. We'll see how that goes. BTW I'm on 10 mg with 6 mg risperidone. It did quiet the symptoms I was experiencing though, which was anxiety/agitation, restlessness (need to keep moving), racing thoughts.

The smallest dose is 2.5 mg. If you get those tabs, you can try 7.5 mg. I would ask for an AD. Zyprexa does many wonders, but removing suicidality is not among the top indications for taking Zyprexa. Zyprexa can help with anxiety.
If buspirone is not helping, tell the pdoc and ask to stop it. Look - you have anxiety and suicidal ideation. What is more dangerous for you? Suicidal ideation. So that should be the main topic to discuss with the pdoc. |
