Does anyone here take Topomax as a mood stabilizer who isn't bipolar? I have PTSD and depression, and I've been on Topomax for a few months as a mood stabilizer. I didn't think it was doing much (I take it in addition to Paxil, Trazadone, and Prazosin), so I stopped taking it. I felt fine for a few days without it, but then my depression, which had been under control, totally tanked. I'm back on as of today, hoping I start notice a difference again.

I was just wondering what others' experience with Topomax was for PTSD and depression?

Thanks,

I have never taken it but I have heard it discussed here quite a bit. I have not heard of it for depression alone. I take Lamictal in the same way you are taking Topomax.

I was diagnosed with a "General Mood Disorder" (whatever that means" that had a strong hormone-based problem. I was prescribed Topamax, 50mg, twice a day. I took it twice, once the night I got my prescription, and then the morning after.

The morning after, I woke up, felt pretty okay. A little nauseous, but I figured it was because I hadn't eaten. I ignored it and got myself to work. Once at work, all the nasty mean side effects kicked in.
I became dizzy, unable to focus, lost mental capacity (I'm a cashier and couldn't count above the number 13), I became incredibly suicidal, I lost motor functions.

That took about 48 hours to pass.

Now, granted, those were just my experiences.
I'm a smaller girl, I weigh 110lbs and I'm 5'2

My psych said it was unusual for anyone to have those side effects and have them so severly!

I don't know of this helps, I was diagnosed with major depression and PTSD for deacdes, later BP, which I know you didn't want BP sufferers but I was put on the topamax before I was diagnosed with BP. It helped with anxiety for me as well as leveling out the moods. It did not lift them but I did not have the serious dips or spikes anymore, especially with the anxiety with the PTSD, when I went on it. I have to take an anti-depressant with it however to lift the depressive mood.

No matter, I hope you find some help soon. Hang in there.

Thanks all so much for your responses. I saw my pdoc yesterday morning and he took my off the Topomax completely. He didn't really think it was doing anything for me. So, I don't have to worry about it anymore.

He did add welbutrin to my Paxil and changed my sleep meds, except for the Prazosin and added some anti-anxiety meds. I'm really hopeful these changes are going to make a difference.

Thank you all so much for your support and advice!
