Does anyone have a good suggestion for an antidepressant for artists? In other words, one that doesn't hinder artistic performance? Thanks!

I can only share my experience, but I felt very creative while on Prozac. Wellbutrin just made me want to gamble. Lexapro turned me into a dullard. Was pretty creative while on Celexa. It's not an anti-depressant per se but I also felt very creative while on Seroquel (once the initial zombie brain cleared up).

Of course, YMMV. What kind of art do you create?

Celexa actually made me more creative. But also it made me lose inhibition I guess related? So I did some dangerous stuff on that med.

Zoloft just made me a zombie, it made me happier at first so I didn't even notice when it started to take instead of give. At the end I had no feelings on it.

Luvox allows me my creativity and my mood swings. I'm just on a low dosage. But it really pulled me up from the hole. Good fit for me, cannot promise the same for anyone else.

Effexor didn't mess up my creativity either but it was so scary coming off I don't recommend it to anyone.

The only ones that didn't stump my creativity were Effexor and Viibryd and I loves me some Viibryd.

Thank you so much for this input. I'm a writer, and when they upped my dosage of Sertraline, I didn't write for a month. Very scary. No dreams, either. Will check out some of your suggestions!

Yeah, I didn't like Effexor. Celexa might be worth a try. Thank you!!

I draw a lot, and paint. I also play violin, am planning on becoming an Art Therapist. I have been on several antidepressants and none of them have caused any problems with my creativity, I don't see why it would but everyone's different I guess. I'm currently on Paxil, not for depression for anxiety and it's working great

I've had good luck with Fetzima. I have been much more creative since I've been on it, however that may just be because it lifted my depression which was sapping all my strength. But since they put me on it in September, I'm back to quilting and working on other creative crafts. I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Have you tried anything except for antidepressant drugs for depression?

I have never noticed a lack of creativity on any of them. Depression saps it for sure. Currently Fetzima is working very well.

A very odd story is the first one I ever took, Effexor. I noticed right away an effect in my ears. Kind of tingly and itchy. Then I noticed my hearing was enhanced and I had all of a sudden developed an ear for music. I had always been tone deaf as far as I could tell. I would sit at the piano and play parts of songs from memory. When I was a kid and would mess with the piano I would put pieces of tape with the notes written on them on the keys to learn silent night. Now I had this ear. It was amazing and bizarre so I bought a key board and worked on developing it. I have it to this day because it made me aware of a part of myself that didn't go away.

Swear to god, true story.

Oh that's cool. I'm a writer too (among other things). I hope you find something that works for you!

Depression is now thought to possibly be caused by an anandamide deficiency. THC is a natural anandmide supplement. If I had these issues I would try marinol, dronabinol, or sativa-dominiant cannabis strains and their extracts before I'd go on SSRIs.

How would one know if they are anandamide deficient?

I experimented with sativa-dominiant cannabis strains very high in THC and they did not at all help with depression. Made it worse I think. Some people say it helps. I can see it for anxiety.

Here is a study on anandamide deficiency and anxiety.

Translational Psychiatry - Central anandamide deficiency predicts stress-induced anxiety: behavioral reversal through endocannabinoid augmentation

I can't find any studies related to depression. It may be CBD that has benefits and not THC. I don't think it is known for sure.
