Hello!

I'm currently taking 150mg of venlafaxine hcl extended release, 300mg of wellbutrin xl, and 25mg of trazodone. I have been on the venlafaxine for over 8 months and this is a pill that (I'm pretty sure) works for me. My problem is with the other two.

I started the trazodone about a month ago; I was prescribed 50mg but I have stayed at 25mg in hopes that the side effects would wear off, but that has not been the case. The wellbutrin I've been taking for about 2 months; I started at 150mg but was increased to 300mg about a month ago. My psychiatrist recently recommended lowering this dose back to the 150mg, but as it is winter break he is not available to write me a prescription for the lower dose.

I have been experiencing pretty bothersome tremors, muscle spasms, and weakness every day. These seem to have increased in severity rather than tapered off or stopped happening--the tremors especially make my life a lot harder than I want it to be. As well as that, today I had a series of brain zaps--I was trying to take a nap and then my brain and legs sort of jolted for a second, stopped, and then a few moments later the same thing happened again. This is the main reason I'm here to get advice, as this is worrisome for me since I've never experienced anything like this before.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out the following: why are these side effects persisting, which pills are causing which side effects (if not both?), and what should I do for the next few weeks while I have no access to my psychiatrist? I do not want to continue experiencing these side effects, and since the trazodone has brought no positive changes I'm considering stopping that one for now--is that safe for me to do/would it be worth trying at this point?

Thank you for reading my long post, and I very much appreciate any responses! As a college student trying to relax on vacation, this all is the opposite of what I wanted to be doing this month

It is hard to say as we are all so different in how we metabolize these things and how we react to them.

Brain zaps are normally associated with withdrawal. Meaning you stopped or reduced dose on one. If you go off of one do a very slow taper to be safe.

Trazadone is an older tetracyclic antidepressant normally only used for sleep these days. Personally I don't think it is great for depression but like I said we are all different. I don't think it is known to have a real bad side effect profile.

If it were me I would stop the trazadone gradually and then see how it goes. Are you taking the trazadone for sleep or depression? You are taking three antidepressants all of different classes. In that case I have only seen trazadone used for sleep.

If you are having unacceptable side effects then you don't have to take it. I guess you have to start with one and then see to know for sure.

I am wondering if you missed a couple of doses of venlafaxine? that can certainly mess you up. venlafaxine is one of the worst to get off and if you go off of that do it very very slowly.

As far as I know wellbutrin is not known to have bad withdrawal. Not sure about trazadone. Most docs will have you go off of one in a week or two but most people on these boards will tell you to do it much slower than that just in case. Not everyone gets withdrawals but better safe than sorry.

The brain zaps sound like an effexor thing (venlafexine), like you missed a dose or took a dose late; it isn't very forgiving that way. I've never had any side effects with wellbutrin xl.

I haven't missed a dose of the venlafaxine, I've been taking it regularly for months now.

The trazodone was prescribed to me for depression & help in allowing me to sleep through the night, but since neither of those things have improved in the weeks that I've been taking it while the side effects have been hard to tolerate, I've decided to stop taking the trazodone for now. I will talk to my psychiatrist as soon as he is back from vacation & will confer with him about where to go from there.

Thank you very much for the advice!
